Judy Tuff

Judy Tuff most recently was the member ministry coordinator for Trinity By The Cove Episcopal Church. This included communication with members, promotion of events, coordinated volunteerism, ownership building, building support materials, managing members via websites.

In addition, she has been trained in many aspects of promotion, marketing, as well as certified in programs such as EFM Ministry, Guardian Ad Litem, and similar programs of outreach.

Judy Tuff took bookkeeping classes by mail in 1964 in preparation for her line of duties at the soon to be purchased community newspaper, The Blackduck American in Blackduck, MN.

The Tuff family moved to Blackduck in March 1965 and Bob Tuff took on full operations of the business which besides the newspaper, included a job shop, where many other types of printing was done. The machinery at the time was the old linotype that used hot lead, and many drawers of hand set type cases.

Their children, Sheila, Sandra, Russell, Roy and Ralph all helped in the business in various ways, from cleaning to helping fold the newspaper on print day as they came off the press one flat sheet at a time. They then had to be gathered, folded and then labeled, bagged and taken to the post office.

The business continued under Tuff ownership, also acquiring the Kelliher Independent newspaper, until 1980 when a neighboring newspaper, the Northome Record became the new owners.

The Tuffs moved to Blue Earth, MN and became owner/operators of The Blue Earth Post, The Elmore Eye and the Winnebago Enterprise.

Many changes in mechanical operations took place, going from hot lead to photographic type setting and then computer generated type. Bookkeeping methods changed as well, from handwritten debit on the right and credit on the left, to programs that placed the numbers in columns designated and generated the monthly and yearly figures.

When both Russell and Roy joined the newspaper business as employees, they also became shareholder in Tuff Publications, Inc. In 1988 the company purchased the Everglades Echo newspaper in Everglades City, FL. Shortly thereafter they acquired the Shoppers Special, the Senior Times and the Golden Gate Gazette.

Bob Tuff died in March 1993. The other family members, Judy, Russell and Kaydee, and Roy and Maria continued the publications from offices in Naples, FL
